NORDIS data analysis: Social media reshapes Norway’s political debate

A new analysis by Faktisk.no, fact-checking partner in the NORDIS project, documents how Norway’s recent parliamentary election marked a turning point in political communication. Drawing on original data Faktisk.no has mapped the activity of politicians, parties, and political influencers on TikTok – revealing patterns that could shape future elections.

The study shows that voter turnout reached its highest level in 36 years, with 79.9 percent of eligible voters casting their ballot. Researchers suggest that the rise of new digital arenas may have contributed to this engagement.

At the same time, TikTok has clearly emerged as a political stage. Generation Party leader Gyda Oddekalv became one of the most visible figures during the campaign, with Faktisk.no’s data showing that her videos generated thousands of comments divided between strong support and strong opposition.

The research highlights how algorithms shape the debate. According to Niels Nagelhus Schia, platforms such as TikTok reward polarising and provocative content, which can undermine information integrity and democratic values. The analysis also points to significant shifts in how voters seek information.

A survey conducted before the election revealed that one in four Norwegians considered using artificial intelligence to help decide how to vote – underlining a growing fragmentation of information sources across different age groups and generations.

While traditional media continue to play a central role, the findings suggest that social media platforms are becoming decisive for visibility, influence, and mobilisation. For small parties, the new landscape offers rapid exposure and direct contact with voters. Yet the same mechanisms may also amplify manipulation and disinformation.

The conclusion of Faktisk.no’s analysis is clear: the public sphere in Norway is rapidly changing, and the dynamics observed in 2025 are likely to intensify in future elections.

After the parliamentary elections on 8 September 2025, Jonas Gahr Støre continued as Prime Minister, with the Labour Party leading a red–green coalition that secured a majority in the Storting.
