New teaching material developed by the Danish fact-checking organisation TjekDet explores how young voters can critically engage with chatbots when navigating political information during elections.
As generative AI becomes widely used in everyday life, many young people increasingly turn to chatbots for explanations, advice and decision-making support. This raises new questions about how such tools influence political understanding and democratic participation – especially when first-time voters may ask AI systems where they should place their vote.
Research and expert assessments suggest that chatbots can sometimes produce biased, incomplete or overly confident answers. Studies have also shown that language models may occasionally steer users toward more extreme political positions or reinforce the user’s existing views. This makes critical awareness of how AI systems generate information particularly important in an election context.
To address this challenge, TjekDet has developed the teaching material “Hey Chat… Who Should I Vote For?”, aimed at upper secondary education. The material helps students understand how chatbots work, how prompting influences answers, and why it is important to critically evaluate sources, biases and potential misinformation when using AI tools.
The goal is not to discourage young people from using artificial intelligence, but to equip them with the skills needed to use such tools responsibly and reflectively in democratic contexts.
To accompany the launch of the material, TjekDet is hosting an online webinar on 13 March 2026 exploring how chatbots may influence young voters and democratic decision-making. The webinar will present the teaching material and discuss how students can develop a more critical understanding of generative AI, prompting, bias and misinformation in the context of elections. Researchers and journalists working with AI, ethics and fact-checking will share insights into how language models generate political answers and what challenges this creates for voters. The event is open for registration, and participants will have the opportunity to join the discussion. The webinar will be conducted partly in English and partly in Danish.
